Speeding up innovation at national and global scales in order to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the world's populations has never been more important.
Health Ecosystem Change Theory offers a new framework for speeding up the development and spread of transformational innovations for improving health and wellbeing in society. What makes the theory unique is the use of service ecosystem design science. This new science has been used to design a new form of organization called an Ecosystem Collaborative. An ecosystem collaborative is a large-scale digitally connected multi-university, multi-stakeholder action-research collaborative that allows key organizations (partners) and individuals (participants) representing an entire ecosystem to work together, collaboratively, to co-create solutions that no one group, including government, can achieve on their own. A 10 year, rolling strategic framework allows all parties to work together, collaboratively, to achieve shared goals. Solutions are co-created through many initiatives organized to address parts of the overall challenge.
The theory interconnects with other disciplines including population health research, health services research, implementation science, economics, organization sciences, information science, informatics, network sciences, ethical and social justice frameworks, ecology, and systems-engineering.
A TIE is a transformational innovation with potential to impact at least a million people and a billion dollars within a decade. TIEs are designed to rapidly improve population health and wellbeing measures at ecosystem scales. There are many kinds of TIEs.
Ethics TIEs - changes in how ethics, justice and reconciliation work in society to foster collaborative problem solving
Policy TIEs - changes in international, national, state or community policies
Technology TIEs - changes in technology platforms, technology standards, big data and analytics, AI systems, and so on.
Payment TIEs - changes in how products or services are paid for
Practice TIEs - changes in how services are developed and delivered
Educational TIEs - changes in how people learn about the world
Workforce TIEs - changes in how people work (e.g. how to support virtualized workforces; how to strengthen work satisfaction)
Research TIEs - changes in how research is conducted to speed up development and dissemination
Economic TIEs - changes in how investments in economic growth and innovation are made
Ecological TIEs - changes in how fundamental systems on which life depends are strengthened
Improves health and wellbeing measures for 1 million or more people within 10 years.
Generates new efficiencies, revenues, profits or capital value worth $1 Billion or more within 10 years.
The study started in April 2020 with the launch of the RAPID Alliance, an ecosystem collaborative designed to optimize use of medications and vaccines in the US from 2022 - 2031.
Desired outcomes of the study are:
Increase in transformational innovations with potential to drive improvements in population health and wellbeing for US and global populations.
improvements in overall population health and wellbeing measures, including the OECD Better Life Index, CDC Healthy People 2030 measures, Medicare Triple Aim Measures, and CDC Healthy Days.
